New longevity genes discovered

Release time:

2024-06-21

A team of researchers from Zhejiang University and the CAS Center for Excellence in Molecular Plant Sciences has taken an alternative approach to discover genes that co-evolve with mitochondria in the nuclear genome of insects, and among them, the CG11837 gene not only affects mitochondrial morphology, but also significantly extends the lifespan of insects and elegans. The longevity gene is the 8th new gene in the world to significantly extend the lifespan of animals. The results were recently published in the journal Nature Aging.

To find reliable evidence, the researchers first performed CG11837 gene knockout experiments in six different animals, including brown planthoppers, fruit flies, Anopheles stephensi and Caenorhabditis elegans. The results showed that reducing the viability of the CG11837 gene significantly shortened the lifespan of all these animals, ranging from 25% to 59%. Conversely, when the researchers overexpressed the gene in fruit flies and elegans, the results showed that both animals had significantly longer lifespans, ranging from 12% to 35%. The research method is unique and novel and has very important scientific value and practical implications in the field of ageing research.
