Nanotechnology holds promise for treating metastatic brain tumours

Release time:

2024-06-21

Researchers at the Miller School of Medicine have developed a nanoparticle that can cross the bloodbrain barrier and can be used as a drug carrier to treat tumours. Preclinical studies have shown that drug delivery with such nanoparticles can shrink both the primary breast cancer tumour and its brain metastases in the treatment.
The preclinical study used a biodegradable polymer nanoparticle carrying two drugs that inhibit the energy source of tumour cells. As tumour cells typically metabolise differently to healthy cells, inhibiting their metabolism is an effective way of killing tumour cells without harming other tissues.The research team will next validate the effectiveness of the therapy in human brain metastatic tumour cells, and also hopes to test the therapy in a laboratory model of the aggressive glioblastoma.
