The 'human skin' smiley face is being developed

Release time:

2024-07-19

A recent study published in Cell Reports reports on a living tissue of human skin cells that can be attached to a robot's face to make expressions. The researchers say the skin is expected to be an ideal covering material for humanoid robots, allowing them to express emotions and communicate in a more realistic way.

The skin developed by Kawai is a mixture of human skin cells grown in a collagen scaffold and placed on a 3Dprinted resin substrate. Unlike the skin grown in previous similar experiments, the skin that can make smiling expressions, contains 'ligaments' similar to those found in human and other animal tissue. These ligamentequivalents are embedded in layers of tissue underneath the skin to make connections, maintain the shape of the skin and give it incredible strength and flexibility.
