A Novel Cryoprotectant Revolutionizes Cell Cryopreservation Technology

Release time:

2024-07-25

This research, led by Professor Songwen Tan's team from Monash University and Central South University, highlights the potential of Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane-3-propanesulfonic acid (TAPS) in the field of cryoprotectants (CPAs). Despite the indispensable role of traditional CPAs in cell preservation, their high toxicity and limited protective effects have been the main bottlenecks restricting their widespread application. This study reveals several advantages of TAPS in this domain:

  1. High Water-Binding Capacity: During cell cryopreservation, TAPS exhibits a significant amount of bound water, which helps effectively inhibit ice recrystallization, thus preventing mechanical damage caused by ice crystals.

  2. Antioxidant Protection: TAPS not only efficiently scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS) but also enhances the activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes. Oxidative stress is a major damage mechanism during the cryopreservation process, and the antioxidant properties of TAPS provide effective protection for cells.

  3. Reduced Toxicity: Compared to many traditional CPAs, TAPS demonstrates lower cytotoxicity, which helps improve the success rate of cell preservation and recover

This research not only provides a new option among CPAs but also deepens our understanding of the mechanisms of cell cryopreservation. In the future, with further validation of TAPS in different cell types and application environments, it is expected to become an important tool in the field of cell cryopreservation, bringing more breakthroughs and advancements to cryobiomedicine.
