On August 10th, the fourth Tsinghua Zhongyuan Forum was held in Beijing. The event was hosted by the Clinical Medical College of Tsinghua University, organized by Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, and co-organized by the Compassionate Care Working Group of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association. The forum aimed to discuss the wisdom of life in traditional Chinese culture and the practice of hospice care with Chinese characteristics.
Director Lu Guijun from Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, affiliated with Tsinghua University, delivered a speech titled "Saluting Life, Resonating with Compassion." In his speech, Lu Guijun emphasized the value of professional hospice care teams in the practice of palliative care. He highlighted their role in managing symptoms, responding to humanistic needs, facilitating life reconciliation, honoring the life journey, and addressing comprehensive physical, mental, spiritual, and social demands.
During the keynote speech session, several distinguished guests delivered speeches, including Professor Sun Mingjun from the School of Humanities at Tsinghua University, Professor Lai Weifu, Honorary Director of the Anesthesia Professional Committee of the Shandong Medical Association, writer Zhi An, Professor Zhai Xiaomei from Peking Union Medical College, Vice Dean Song Lilin from the Confucius Culture Research Institute of Qufu Normal University, Deputy Chief Surgeon Tian Meice from the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Fuwai Hospital of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and Professor Che Feng from Beijing Normal University.
Among them, Director Lai Weifu delivered a speech titled "Cryonics and Soul Preservation." In his address, Professor Lai Weifu introduced the subtle relationship between end-of-life care and cryonics technology. He stressed that the current medical system should pay attention to the real feelings of terminal patients and their families, face the challenges within the existing medical system, help patients and their families alleviate pain as much as possible, and improve their quality of life. Additionally, Director Lai shared stories behind his role as a promoter and participant in China's first human cryonics operation. He emphasized the role of anesthesia in cryonics and explained the reasons for carrying out cryonics. He believes that cryonics is a medical method that can freeze cancer cells and is a helpless extension of modern medicine and a wait for future medicine. Conducting cryonics has significant implications for organ preservation, reducing patients' fear of death, benefiting national medical research, and exploring interstellar civilization.
Besides the main forum, this year's Tsinghua Zhongyuan Forum included a Youth Forum. The guests shared their thoughts and experiences on topics such as the relationship between life and death, traditional Chinese culture, and the development and dissemination of life and death education. This provided an excellent platform for public life education and enlightenment, contributing to the construction of a hospice care system with Chinese characteristics and achieving the strategic goal of a healthy China.
